What you need

  • A myGov account linked to the Australian Taxation Office for the online method.
  • Access to your ATO online services account.
  • An eligible super account to receive the transferred balance if you decide to consolidate.
  • Review the insurance, fees, investment options and other benefits attached to each account before closing it.
  • If your employer is currently contributing to an account you plan to close, arrange for future contributions to go to the account you intend to keep.

Eligibility

You can use ATO online services to check superannuation accounts associated with you, including active accounts, lost super and super held by the ATO. Online consolidation is available where the accounts shown by the ATO are eligible for transfer. Some accounts or benefits may require you to deal directly with the super fund, and special care is appropriate before transferring from a defined benefit fund or an account with valuable insurance or other benefits.

How to do it

  1. Sign in to myGov and open the linked Australian Taxation Office service.
  2. Select Super and then Fund details to review the super accounts and balances reported to the ATO, including lost and ATO-held super where applicable.
  3. Compare the accounts before deciding which one to keep. Check fees, long-term performance, investment options, insurance cover and any other benefits.
  4. Check whether an account you are considering closing has life, total and permanent disability or income protection insurance. Confirm that you will have suitable cover before giving up existing insurance.
  5. If you decide to consolidate, select Super, then Manage, then Transfer super. This option is available through the online service when there is more than one eligible super account.
  6. Select the account you want to transfer from and the eligible account you want the money transferred to.
  7. Review the details carefully and submit the rollover request.
  8. If ATO-held super is displayed, use the available transfer option to move it to an eligible super account where permitted.
  9. After the rollover is completed, check your receiving fund account and your ATO online services information to confirm the balance has been transferred.
  10. If your employer was paying contributions into an account that you closed, give your employer the details of the account you want future super contributions paid into.

How to find all your super accounts in Australia

The simplest way to find multiple superannuation accounts is through ATO online services linked to myGov. The ATO can display super accounts reported under your details, including active accounts, lost super and super that has been transferred to the ATO as unclaimed super.

Sign in to myGov, open the Australian Taxation Office service and select Super. Use Fund details to see the accounts and balances reported to the ATO. Fund balances shown by the ATO may reflect the most recent information reported by the fund rather than a real-time balance.

What is lost super and ATO-held super?

Lost super generally refers to super held by a fund where the fund has lost contact with the member or the account meets applicable inactivity conditions. Unclaimed super may be transferred by a fund to the ATO in circumstances required by law. Both lost super and ATO-held super can appear through ATO online services.

If you cannot use myGov, you can also search for lost super through the ATO. The ATO provides an automated super search line on 13 28 65 and a paper form for searching for lost and unclaimed super. Your super fund may also be able to search on your behalf.

How to consolidate multiple super accounts through myGov

After checking which accounts you have, you can consolidate eligible super by rolling balances from accounts you no longer want into the account you choose to keep.

In ATO online services, select Super, then Manage, then Transfer super. Choose the account you want to transfer from and the eligible account you want the balance transferred to, review the request and submit it.

You can also contact the super fund you want to keep and ask it how to roll other super balances into that account. If you cannot use myGov, an ATO rollover form may be available for a fund-to-fund rollover.

What to check before combining super accounts

Insurance cover

Do not consolidate solely to reduce the number of accounts. First check whether any account provides life insurance, total and permanent disability insurance or income protection insurance. Closing an account can cause insurance attached to that account to end, and equivalent replacement cover may not be available on the same terms.

Moneysmart advises taking particular care where insurance is important to you. If you plan to replace cover, confirm the new insurance before giving up existing cover.

Fees and investment performance

Combining super may reduce the number of sets of account fees you pay, but the largest account is not automatically the best account to keep. Compare fees, investment options, services and long-term performance before deciding where to consolidate your retirement savings.

Defined benefit accounts and valuable benefits

Check whether any account is a defined benefit fund. Moneysmart recommends obtaining professional advice before rolling money out of a defined benefit arrangement because valuable benefits may be lost and it may not be possible to rejoin the fund later.

Employer contributions

If your employer is currently paying super into an account that you intend to close, make sure future contributions are redirected to the account you are keeping. Your employer may ask for the receiving fund's name, unique superannuation identifier and your member number, together with any other required information.

How long does a super rollover take?

Under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Regulations, a standard rollover or transfer that is subject to the ordinary portability rules must generally be completed by the transferring trustee as soon as practicable and no later than 3 business days after receiving the rollover request or, where further required information is requested, after receiving that information.

Different time limits can apply to non-standard transfers and exceptional situations, including certain investments or circumstances where a receiving fund cannot accept the transfer through the standard process. The receiving fund also has regulatory obligations for allocating a rollover after receiving the payment and required information.

Is there a fee to find or consolidate super?

You do not need to pay a third party to find your super. You can search for it free through the ATO or your current super fund. Using ATO online services to submit a transfer request does not itself require a government application fee.

Before transferring, check the product disclosure and current information from each fund for any fees, costs or financial consequences associated with changing accounts or investments.

What happens to insurance when you consolidate super?

Insurance is one of the most important checks before a rollover. An old account may include insurance that is difficult or more expensive to replace. Moving the full balance and closing the account can affect that cover. Compare your existing insurance with the cover available through the account you intend to keep and consider obtaining licensed financial advice where the decision could materially affect you.

What if your super does not appear in myGov?

Super funds report information to the ATO, so the balance and account information shown online may not always be fully up to date. If you believe an account is missing, contact the relevant super fund or use the ATO's lost super search options. Previous names, addresses, employment details and fund information can help locate an account.

Can ATO-held super be transferred to a super fund?

Yes, eligible ATO-held super can be transferred through ATO online services to an eligible super account. In myGov, open the ATO service and go to Super, Manage and Transfer super. The options shown will depend on the super held for you and the accounts available to receive it.

Should you consolidate all your super into one account?

Not necessarily. Consolidation can make super easier to manage and may reduce duplicate fees, but the decision should take account of insurance, investment options, performance, employer arrangements, fees and valuable fund-specific benefits. Defined benefit accounts require particular caution. If you are unsure whether transferring is appropriate for your circumstances, contact the funds involved or obtain advice from a licensed financial adviser.
