Quick answer

If your business address changes, update your Australian Business Register (ABR) details within 28 days of becoming aware of the change. The fastest method is ABR online services using myID and Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM). Your main business address must be the physical street address of the business or organisation, while your postal address can be different. Changes submitted online take effect immediately.

What you need

  • An existing Australian Business Number (ABN).
  • The new physical street address of the business or organisation.
  • Your current postal address, if it is different from the business address.
  • For online access, a myID linked to the ABN through Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM), or an appropriate authorisation to act for the entity.
  • Check any additional business locations and contact information at the same time so the ABR record remains current.

Eligibility

This procedure is for an existing ABN holder whose registered business address has changed and who needs to update the Australian Business Register. It is not an application for a new ABN. If the underlying business structure has changed, an address update alone may not be sufficient and you may need to cancel the existing ABN and apply for a new one.

How to do it

  1. Gather the new physical street address for your business and check whether your postal address, additional locations or contact details also need updating.
  2. Access ABR online services using your Digital ID, such as myID, linked to the ABN through Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).
  3. Select Update ABN record.
  4. Select Business address and enter the physical street address of the business or organisation.
  5. Check Postal address. This can be different from the main business address and may be a post office box or your tax or BAS agent's address.
  6. Check Additional location and update any other business locations where necessary.
  7. Check the remaining contact information, then select Declaration and submit the update.
  8. If you cannot use ABR online services, contact the ABR, ask your tax professional to update the details, or use the applicable registration-details form and mail it as instructed.

How long do you have to update your ABN address?

An ABN holder must notify the Registrar when information recorded in the Australian Business Register becomes incorrect because circumstances have changed. Under section 14 of the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999, notification must be made within 28 days after you become aware of the change.

This applies to a change in your business address. The Australian Business Register also instructs ABN holders to keep postal addresses, business activities, associates and contact details current where those details change.

How to change your business address online

The Australian Business Register says the fastest way to update ABN details is through ABR online services. To access the service on behalf of a business or entity, you use myID and Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM). Your myID must be linked to the ABN in RAM, or you must have the appropriate authorisation to act for the entity.

  1. Log in to ABR online services.
  2. Select Update ABN record.
  3. Open Business address and enter or confirm the physical location of the business or organisation.
  4. Open Postal address and update it if correspondence should be sent somewhere else.
  5. Review Additional location if the business operates from other locations.
  6. Check the other contact information recorded for the business.
  7. Select Declaration and submit the changes.

Changes made to an ABN online take effect immediately.

Can your business address be a PO Box?

No. The ABR requires the main business address to identify the physical street location of the business or organisation. A post office box or a tax or BAS agent's address should not be used as the main business address.

Your postal address is separate. The ABR states that the postal address can be the address where you want communications sent, including a post office box, your tax or BAS agent's address, or the same address as your main business address.

What if your business has more than one location?

When updating the ABN record, also check the Additional location section. Additional business locations should likewise identify the street address of the business location. This is useful when a business operates from more than one physical site.

What if you cannot update the address online?

If you cannot access ABR online services, the Australian Business Register provides alternative routes. You can contact the ABR, ask your tax professional to update the details, or complete and mail the applicable registration-details form. The ATO's Change of registration details form is identified as NAT 2943.

For businesses that can use the online service, the ABR identifies online updating as the fastest option. A registered tax or BAS professional may also be able to update registration details on behalf of an authorised client.

What do you need to access the ABR online?

The ABR currently uses myID, the Australian Government's Digital ID app, together with Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM). Everyone accessing ABR online services on behalf of a business or entity needs their own myID. The ABR states that myID requires Standard or Strong identity strength for access to its online services.

A principal authority, such as a sole trader or an eligible individual associate recorded against the ABN, can establish the business link in RAM. An authorised user or administrator must be authorised in RAM before acting for the business online.

If you need to set up your digital identity before managing the ABN, see the Helpydo guide to setting up myID in Australia.

Do you need a new ABN when your address changes?

A change of business address is handled by updating the existing ABN record; it does not by itself mean you apply for a new ABN. However, the ABR warns that a change in business structure may require the existing ABN to be cancelled and a new ABN obtained.

For example, if you are moving from operating as a sole trader to a company, that is a structural change rather than simply an address update. See the separate guide on changing from a sole trader to a company. If a genuinely new ABN is required, follow the ABN application procedure.

What should you check before submitting?

Do not update only the first address field and assume the entire record is current. Before submitting, check the main business address, postal address, additional locations and contact information. The ABR specifically asks businesses to keep these details current so government agencies have accurate information.

Also remember that some information cannot be changed through the ordinary ABR online update process. The ABR states that entity type, business names and trading names cannot be updated there. Legal names for individuals and sole traders are handled through the ATO, while legal names for ASIC-registered companies are handled through ASIC.

If your move is connected with a broader change to the registered business name, use the appropriate business-name process rather than treating the name change as an ABN address update. Helpydo also has a separate guide to registering an Australian business name with ASIC.
