Eligibility
This notification is for people who need a new passport linked to an Australian visa or citizenship application, or to an existing Australian visa. The ImmiAccount route is available when the relevant application can be accessed there. Certain circumstances require the New Passport Details web form. Holders of an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) subclass 601 must apply for a new ETA with the new passport because an existing ETA cannot be transferred.
How to do it
- Have your new passport available and identify the visa or application whose passport details need updating.
- Sign in to ImmiAccount and select the relevant application. Choose Edit or View details to open Application home.
- Select Update details, then Change of passport details. Select the applicant, enter the new passport details and reason for the change, and select Submit.
- If the application cannot be imported or another listed exception prevents the ImmiAccount change, complete the Department's New Passport Details web form instead.
- Allow the Department's stated processing period before relying on the new passport being linked. If you hold an ETA subclass 601, apply for a new ETA using your new passport rather than submitting a transfer request.
Why must you report a new passport?
The Department of Home Affairs asks you to tell it when you get a new passport so it can link that document to your existing visa or visa or citizenship application. Make the change before travelling. Updating passport details is a record change; it does not itself grant a new visa. Once the new document is linked, you can check current visa details and conditions through VEVO.
How do you update passport details in ImmiAccount?
Sign in to ImmiAccount and select your application. Choose Edit or View details to open Application home, then select Update details → Change of passport details. Select the applicant, enter the new passport details and the reason for the change, and submit. The Department says it will link the new passport to the application or existing visa within 3 business days.
If you have not previously used ImmiAccount, you can create an account and may be able to import your application before using the online passport-change function.
When must you use the web form?
Use the Department's New Passport Details web form if you cannot import your application into ImmiAccount; your travel document is a Titre de Voyage or Certificate of Identity; your partner visa application is not visible in ImmiAccount; your acknowledgement letter has an application ID beginning with IRIS; your sex or gender has changed; or your date of birth has changed on your passport. The Department lists 14 days as the processing time for this route.
The Department says not to use this web form if you hold an Australian passport. If your issue is an address, email or phone change, follow the separate contact-details procedure.
What if you hold an ETA subclass 601?
An Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) subclass 601 cannot be transferred to a new passport. If you obtain a new passport, apply for a new ETA using that passport. Do not assume the processing periods for an ImmiAccount passport update or the New Passport Details web form apply to a new ETA application.
