Quick answer

You may qualify for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness if you have an outstanding federal Canada Student Loan in good standing and work in an eligible occupation in a qualifying rural or remote community. Most applicants must complete a 12-month loan-forgiveness period, provide at least 400 hours of in-person services and apply within 90 days after that period ends. Teachers, social workers, psychologists and early childhood educators working in schools need 10 consecutive months of employment within the 12-month period; family medicine residents do not need to complete a full year and may apply after accumulating 400 hours, subject to the program rules. Depending on your occupation, you can receive up to $15,000, $30,000 or $60,000 over a maximum of five periods. Applications can be submitted online through the National Student Loans Service Centre or by mail.

CostNo application fee is listed by the Government of Canada or the National Student Loans Service Centre for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness. The benefit reduces eligible outstanding federal Canada Student Loan principal rather than providing a separate cash payment.
Processing timeThe Government of Canada does not publish a fixed processing time for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness. Processing depends on the assessment of the application and employment information.

What you need

  • An outstanding Canada Student Loan in good standing, meaning required payments are up to date.
  • Employment or practice in one of the occupations recognized by the federal loan-forgiveness program.
  • Work in an eligible rural area or a population centre with 30,000 people or fewer, subject to the program's transitional rule for doctors and nurses.
  • At least 400 hours of in-person services during the applicable loan-forgiveness period.
  • For most occupations, a 12-month loan-forgiveness period with the required employment or practice. Teachers, social workers, psychologists and early childhood educators working in schools must have 10 consecutive months of employment within that 12-month period. The full-year work requirement does not apply to family medicine residents.
  • A valid provincial or territorial licence or registration and compliance with professional requirements where required. Specific exemptions apply to family medicine residents, personal support workers, physiotherapists in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and early childhood educators in New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
  • If applying on paper, the Application for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness and all required Employment Attestation forms.
  • A separate Employment Attestation for each eligible community if you worked in more than one qualifying community during the period.
  • The application must normally reach the NSLSC within 90 days after the end of the applicable loan-forgiveness period.

Eligibility

You can apply for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness while your loan is in repayment, while you are studying or during the six-month non-repayment period, provided your federal Canada Student Loan is in good standing and you satisfy the occupation, community, service and application requirements. Eligible occupations include family doctors, family medicine residents, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, registered practical nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, early childhood educators, midwives, personal support workers, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers and teachers. The ten occupations added most recently became eligible on December 31, 2025. Private student loans, loans converted to a line of credit and Ontario Medical Resident Loans are not eligible, and the benefit applies only to the federal portion of a government student loan.

How to do it

  1. Confirm that you have an outstanding federal Canada Student Loan in good standing. Private loans, lines of credit and Ontario Medical Resident Loans do not qualify.
  2. Confirm that your occupation is on the current federal list and that you meet any applicable provincial or territorial licensing or registration requirements.
  3. Check the community where you work using the federal Canada Student Loan Forgiveness postal-code lookup. Eligibility is ultimately confirmed when your application is assessed.
  4. Complete the required service period. Most applicants need a 12-month loan-forgiveness period and at least 400 hours of in-person service.
  5. Have the required employment information attested. If you worked in multiple eligible communities, obtain a separate Employment Attestation for each one so the combined attestations cover the required period.
  6. Apply only after completing the applicable service requirement and submit the application within 90 days after the end of your loan-forgiveness period. Family medicine residents follow the program's special timing rule.
  7. Apply online through your NSLSC account, accessed through My Service Canada Account, or complete and mail the Application for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness together with all Employment Attestation forms to the National Student Loans Service Centre, P.O. Box 4030, Mississauga, ON L5A 4M4.
  8. Continue making required student-loan payments while waiting. Forgiveness is applied to the principal balance only after the service period and application are approved.
  9. If approved, the NSLSC reduces your outstanding Canada Student Loan balance. Your monthly payments are also automatically reduced unless you choose on the application to keep the existing monthly payment amount.
  10. If you remain eligible for another service period, apply again after completing it. You can receive forgiveness for a maximum of five non-overlapping periods, and the periods do not have to be consecutive.

Who qualifies for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness?

The federal Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program reduces student debt for borrowers who provide services in specified occupations in eligible rural or remote communities. To qualify, you must have an outstanding Canada Student Loan in good standing, work in an eligible occupation and community, complete the applicable service period and meet the in-person service requirement.

You do not have to wait until your loan enters repayment. The Government of Canada permits eligible borrowers to apply while studying, during the six-month non-repayment period or while repaying their loan.

The benefit applies only to the outstanding federal portion of your student loan. It does not forgive a provincial or territorial student-loan balance. Private loans, Canada Student Loans converted to a line of credit and Ontario Medical Resident Loans are also excluded.

Which occupations are eligible in 2026?

The current eligible occupations are:

  • family doctor;
  • family medicine resident;
  • licensed practical nurse;
  • nurse practitioner;
  • registered nurse;
  • registered psychiatric nurse;
  • registered practical nurse;
  • dentist;
  • dental hygienist;
  • early childhood educator;
  • midwife;
  • personal support worker;
  • pharmacist;
  • physiotherapist;
  • psychologist;
  • social worker; and
  • teacher.

Dentists, dental hygienists, early childhood educators, midwives, personal support workers, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers and teachers became eligible on December 31, 2025.

Do you need a professional licence or registration?

You generally need a valid licence or registration from the applicable province or territory and must meet the professional requirements for the occupation where you work.

The current application identifies specific exceptions. Family medicine residents do not need a full licence but must have the appropriate provincial or territorial authorization. Personal support workers are exempt from licensing. Physiotherapists working in the Northwest Territories or Nunavut are exempt from the licensing requirement, as are early childhood educators working in New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut.

Personal support workers also have an additional occupational requirement: during the claimed hours they must have provided one-on-one care and essential support consistent with a client's health-care needs as identified by a regulated health professional or a community or provincial health organization.

What communities qualify for student loan forgiveness?

Under the current definition, an eligible community is either a rural area or a population centre with 30,000 people or fewer, using Statistics Canada census information.

The Government of Canada provides a postal-code lookup to check whether a workplace may be in an eligible community. The final determination is made when the application is assessed, so the government advises borrowers to contact the National Student Loans Service Centre before making employment decisions if eligibility is uncertain.

You may work in more than one eligible community or for more than one employer during a qualifying year as long as all program requirements continue to be met.

Special transitional rule for doctors and nurses

For family doctors, family medicine residents, nurses and nurse practitioners, the program temporarily continues to recognize the previous community definition until data from the 2026 Census of Population is implemented.

The previous definition generally covered municipalities outside census metropolitan areas, outside census agglomerations with an urban core population of 50,000 or more, and outside provincial capitals.

There is also a continuity provision: if you continue working in an eligible occupation in a community for which you received this forgiveness benefit in the previous year, the current federal guidance says you can remain eligible even if that community is no longer classified as eligible.

How long must you work before applying?

Most applicants select a 12-month loan-forgiveness period during which they work or practise in one or more eligible communities and provide at least 400 hours of in-person services.

A break in service of no more than one month does not by itself prevent the 12 months from being treated as consecutive under the current application rules.

Special rule for school-based professionals

If you are a teacher, social worker, early childhood educator or psychologist working for a school, your loan-forgiveness period remains 12 months, but your Employment Attestation forms need to show 10 consecutive months of employment within that 12-month period.

Special rule for family medicine residents

The requirement to have worked for a full year does not apply to family medicine residents. The current application states that a family medicine resident may apply once they have accumulated 400 hours of in-person service, but may apply only once in a 12-month period.

Can sick leave or parental leave affect eligibility?

You may still qualify if a break of one month or more, or a break that prevents you from reaching 400 hours, resulted from certain recognized circumstances. These include your own illness, injury, disability or quarantine; caring for a family member affected by illness, injury, disability or quarantine; pregnancy or childbirth; or caring for a newborn or newly adopted child.

Eligible leave can be supported by Employment Insurance special benefits, a provincial benefit, private insurance or an unpaid or self-funded leave. The application asks for information that allows the program to assess whether the interruption satisfies the exception.

How much student loan forgiveness can you receive?

The amount depends on your occupation and the number of eligible forgiveness periods completed. The program permits a maximum of five periods, which do not have to be consecutive but cannot overlap.

Up to $15,000 over five periods

Early childhood educators, dental hygienists and personal support workers can receive up to $15,000:

  • Year 1: $2,000
  • Year 2: $2,500
  • Year 3: $3,000
  • Year 4: $3,500
  • Year 5: $4,000

Up to $30,000 over five periods

Nurse practitioners, registered nurses, registered or licensed practical nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, midwives, teachers, social workers and physiotherapists can receive up to $30,000:

  • Year 1: $4,000
  • Year 2: $5,000
  • Year 3: $6,000
  • Year 4: $7,000
  • Year 5: $8,000

Up to $60,000 over five periods

Family doctors, family medicine residents, dentists, psychologists and pharmacists can receive up to $60,000:

  • Year 1: $8,000
  • Year 2: $10,000
  • Year 3: $12,000
  • Year 4: $14,000
  • Year 5: $16,000

The benefit cannot exceed your outstanding eligible federal loan balance. You can receive a maximum of five forgiveness periods even if you move from one eligible occupation to another.

When must you apply?

Timing is critical. Once you complete your qualifying service period, you normally have 90 days after the last day of the loan-forgiveness period to submit your application.

The paper application states that it must be signed after the last day of the qualifying period and received by the NSLSC no later than the 90-day deadline. An application received after that deadline is refused and you would need to establish eligibility for a new qualifying period.

You must reapply for every year or qualifying period for which you want forgiveness. The five periods do not need to be consecutive.

What employment documents do you need?

The Employment Attestation confirms the work used to establish your eligibility. The community entered on the form must match the community identified by the federal postal-code lookup.

If you worked in multiple eligible communities, complete a separate Employment Attestation for each community. Together, the forms must cover the applicable forgiveness period.

For paper applications, the current form warns that the application and all Employment Attestations must be submitted together. If they are sent separately, the application will be rejected.

The current application also accommodates employed, self-employed and mixed employment situations. The NSLSC may request additional documentation from a self-employed applicant.

How to apply online through the NSLSC

The complete application can be submitted electronically through the National Student Loans Service Centre. Since May 25, 2025, borrowers access the NSLSC account through My Service Canada Account.

Apply after completing the required period and before the 90-day deadline. Follow the NSLSC application process and provide the requested employment information and attestations.

How to apply by mail

You can instead download and complete the Application for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness and the Employment Attestation for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness.

Send the completed application and all required Employment Attestation forms together to:

National Student Loans Service Centre
P.O. Box 4030
Mississauga, ON L5A 4M4

The current paper application does not accept an electronic signature. Sign and date it after the final day of your forgiveness period and make sure it reaches the NSLSC within the 90-day application window.

Do you keep making student loan payments while waiting?

Yes. Loan forgiveness is applied to your loan's principal balance after completion of the service period. The Government of Canada specifically instructs borrowers to keep making required payments while the process is underway.

There is no fixed processing time published on the current federal program page, so do not stop or change required payments merely because you submitted an application.

If making your regular payments is difficult for reasons separate from your rural-service eligibility, the Repayment Assistance Plan is a different federal student-loan support program with its own eligibility rules.

What happens after your application is approved?

Once approved, the eligible forgiveness amount is applied against your outstanding Canada Student Loan principal.

Your monthly student-loan payments are then automatically reduced to reflect the lower balance unless you choose on the application to keep your monthly payment amount unchanged. You can also change your monthly payments later under the NSLSC payment options.

If you complete another eligible period and still have an outstanding Canada Student Loan balance, you can apply again, up to the five-period program maximum.

How is this different from other Canada student loan relief?

Canada Student Loan Forgiveness is based primarily on your occupation, eligible community and completed service. It is different from assistance based on income or disability.

If you have difficulty making payments but do not qualify through an eligible rural or remote occupation, see the Canada student loan Repayment Assistance Plan procedure. A borrower whose severe permanent disability prevents substantial gainful employment may instead need the separate Severe Permanent Disability Benefit procedure.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming any small town qualifies without checking the current federal community rules and postal-code lookup.
  • Applying before completing the required service period.
  • Missing the 90-day application deadline.
  • Counting telephone, virtual or other work toward the 400-hour requirement when the program requires in-person services.
  • Failing to maintain your Canada Student Loan in good standing.
  • Expecting the program to forgive the provincial or territorial portion of an integrated student loan.
  • Trying to claim a private loan, a loan converted to a line of credit or an Ontario Medical Resident Loan.
  • Failing to meet the licensing or registration requirements that apply to your occupation.
  • Using only one Employment Attestation when you worked in several eligible communities and separate attestations are required.
  • Mailing the application and Employment Attestation forms separately; the current paper application says they must be sent together.
  • Stopping required student-loan payments while waiting for the forgiveness application to be assessed.
  • Assuming one approved year automatically covers future years. You must apply again for each eligible forgiveness period.
