What you need

  • An eligible full standalone doctoral course lasting between 3 and 8 academic years.
  • The course must be provided by a UK university with research degree awarding powers.
  • You must meet the relevant age, nationality and residency conditions.
  • Your Student Finance England account details, or the information needed to create an account.
  • If you are a UK national, valid UK passport details can normally be entered in the application.
  • If you do not have a valid UK passport, Student Finance England may require your original birth or adoption certificate.
  • Additional residency, immigration or employment evidence if Student Finance England requests it for your eligibility route.
  • Your university, course, start date and course-duration details.
  • The amount of loan you want to request, up to the maximum available for your course start date.

Eligibility

You may qualify for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan from Student Finance England if your doctoral course meets the course rules, you are under 60 on the first day of the first academic year, and you meet an eligible nationality and residency route. A common route applies where you are a UK national or Irish citizen, or have settled status or indefinite leave to remain, normally live in England, and have lived in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for the 3 years before the first day of the first academic year, apart from temporary absences. Other eligible residence categories also exist. You cannot normally receive the loan if, for example, you already hold a doctoral degree or equivalent or higher qualification, are receiving Research Council funding, are eligible for an NHS bursary, are receiving certain other bursaries, are already receiving Student Finance England payments for another course, or have previously received a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan unless the permitted serious-personal-reason exception applies.

How to do it

  1. Check your course. Confirm it is a full standalone doctoral programme, normally lasting 3 to 8 academic years and provided by a UK university with research degree awarding powers.
  2. Check your personal eligibility. Confirm that you meet the age, nationality and residency rules and that none of the funding exclusions applies.
  3. Check how much you can borrow. For courses starting on or after 1 August 2026, you can request up to £31,122 for the whole course.
  4. Sign in to Student Finance England. Use your existing account if you have borrowed from Student Finance England before, or create an account if you do not have one.
  5. Apply online. You only need to submit one Postgraduate Doctoral Loan application for the course, even when it lasts several years.
  6. Use the paper form if you cannot apply online. For a 2026 to 2027 course, use the official Postgraduate Doctoral Loan application form for that academic year and send it to the address shown on the form.
  7. Provide identity evidence. UK nationals can normally provide valid UK passport details. If you do not have a valid UK passport, Student Finance England may require your original birth or adoption certificate.
  8. Send any additional evidence requested. This can include documents supporting residency, immigration status or UK employment.
  9. Apply before the deadline. Your application must be made within 9 months of the first day of the final academic year of your course.
  10. Wait for approval and registration confirmation. Your first payment is made after your course has started and your university confirms that you have registered.

How much can you get for a doctoral course starting in 2026?

For an eligible doctoral course that starts on or after 1 August 2026, you can borrow up to £31,122 from Student Finance England.

The loan can be used towards both course fees and living costs. It is paid directly to you rather than directly to your university.

The amount available is not based on your income or your family's income.

If your course lasts more than one academic year, the loan is divided equally across the years of the course.

What type of doctoral course qualifies?

Your course must normally:

  • be a full standalone doctoral course, rather than a top-up course;
  • have started on or after 1 August 2018;
  • last between 3 and 8 academic years; and
  • be provided by a UK university with research degree awarding powers.

The course can be full-time or part-time and can be taught, research-based or a combination of both.

Eligible doctoral qualifications can include a PhD or DPhil, Doctor of Education (EdD) and Doctor of Engineering (EngD).

Can an integrated doctoral programme qualify?

Yes. A doctoral programme that includes an integrated master's degree can qualify, even if you already hold a master's degree, provided you register for the full doctoral degree.

You cannot also receive a separate Postgraduate Master's Loan for the integrated master's element.

What if part of the doctoral course is overseas?

If more than one university provides the course and one institution is overseas, the course can still qualify if the UK university is the lead institution and you spend at least 50% of your study time over the whole course in the UK.

What is the age limit?

You must be under 60 on the first day of the first academic year of your course.

The first day of the academic year depends on when your course starts:

  • courses starting from 1 August to 31 December: 1 September;
  • courses starting from 1 January to 31 March: 1 January;
  • courses starting from 1 April to 30 June: 1 April; and
  • courses starting in July: 1 July.

What are the nationality and residency rules?

Eligibility depends on your nationality and residence history. One of the main qualifying routes applies where all of the following are true:

  • you are a UK national or Irish citizen, or you have settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme or indefinite leave to remain;
  • you normally live in England; and
  • you have lived in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for the 3 years before the first day of the first academic year, apart from temporary absences such as holidays.

There are additional eligibility routes for some EU nationals and family members, refugees, people with humanitarian protection, people with certain Afghan or Ukraine permissions, stateless people and several other immigration categories. Student Finance England assesses the route that applies to your circumstances.

Moving to England only for study does not normally make England your place of ordinary residence for student finance purposes.

What if the doctorate is distance learning?

For a distance-learning Postgraduate Doctoral Loan, you need to be living in England on the first day of the first academic year.

You will also normally need to live:

  • in England for the whole course if you are an EU national; or
  • in the UK for the whole course if you are not an EU national.

Different treatment can apply to certain serving members of the armed forces and their qualifying family members.

When can you not get a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan?

You will normally be ineligible if you:

  • have received or will receive Research Council funding, including relevant studentships, stipends, scholarships or tuition-fee support;
  • are already receiving a social work bursary;
  • are receiving an Educational Psychology bursary for an affected course;
  • are eligible to apply for an NHS bursary, even if you do not actually receive it;
  • are already getting Student Finance England payments for another course you are studying;
  • already have a doctoral degree or an equivalent or higher qualification;
  • are receiving a doctorate by publication; or
  • have previously received a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan, unless the official serious-personal-reason exception applies.

Can you receive another doctoral loan after leaving an earlier course?

You may be able to receive another Postgraduate Doctoral Loan if you left the previous course because of illness, bereavement or another serious personal reason. Student Finance England decides whether your circumstances qualify.

How do you apply online?

Applications for the 2026 to 2027 academic year are open.

If you have previously borrowed from Student Finance England, use your existing account. If you do not have an account, you can create one as part of the application process.

You normally need to apply only once for the entire doctoral course, even when the programme lasts several years. Student Finance England contacts you before each later academic year to confirm how much you will receive.

If you are considering other higher-education funding, Helpydo also has a separate guide to applying for undergraduate Student Finance England funding. That process is separate from a doctoral loan.

Can you apply for a doctoral loan by post?

Yes. If you cannot apply online, use the official Postgraduate Doctoral Loan application form for 2026 to 2027.

The postal address for Student Finance England is printed on the application form. The official application notes should be read before completing the form.

What proof of identity do you need?

If you are a UK national, you can normally provide details from a valid UK passport in your application.

If you cannot apply online or need to provide passport information afterwards, use the appropriate UK passport details form for the academic year in which your course starts. GOV.UK says not to send the passport itself.

If you do not have a UK passport or it has expired, Student Finance England instructs you to send your original birth or adoption certificate.

When sending identity evidence, include your name and address and, if you have one, your 11-digit Student Finance England customer reference number.

Will you need to send extra evidence?

Some applicants need additional documents to prove their eligibility. This depends on nationality, immigration status, residency history or employment circumstances.

For 2026 to 2027, Student Finance England provides a specific Postgraduate Doctoral document return form for additional supporting information, such as evidence of residency status.

There is also a 2026 to 2027 UK employment form for applicants who need to provide evidence of their own or a family member's UK employment status.

Student Finance England says you can return the employment form with as much evidence as you currently have, but missing evidence can delay the application while further information is requested.

What is the application deadline?

The deadline depends on the length and start date of your doctorate.

You must apply within 9 months of the first day of the final academic year of your course.

The first day of an academic year is:

  • 1 September for a course starting between 1 August and 31 December;
  • 1 January for a course starting between 1 January and 31 March;
  • 1 April for a course starting between 1 April and 30 June; or
  • 1 July for a course starting in July.

This means there is not one universal calendar deadline for every doctoral student. Calculate the deadline from the first day of your course's final academic year.

Can you apply after your doctoral course has already started?

Yes. GOV.UK says you can apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan in any year of the course, provided you are still within the application deadline.

However, if you apply after your first year, you may not be able to receive the full course maximum. For a course starting on or after 1 August 2026, the maximum available when applying after the first year is £13,206.

How is the doctoral loan paid?

The loan is paid directly to you and is divided equally across each academic year of the course.

Within each academic year, payments are made in three instalments:

  • 33%;
  • 33%; and
  • 34%.

Your first payment is made after the course start date once your university or college confirms that you have registered.

After the application is approved, Student Finance England sends you your payment dates, and you can also see them in your online account.

Can you change how much you want to borrow?

Yes. Student Finance England provides a specific Postgraduate Doctoral Loan request form for 2026 to 2027 if you need to change the amount you originally requested.

The official guidance states that this particular change cannot be made online; you must use the loan request form.

Can you get childcare or dependant grants with the loan?

Student Finance England states that doctoral students receiving this type of funding are not eligible for:

  • Adult Dependants' Grant;
  • Childcare Grant; or
  • Parents' Learning Allowance.

Disabled Students' Allowance may still be available separately if you meet its conditions.

When do you start repaying the doctoral loan?

A Postgraduate Doctoral Loan is repayable. Interest is charged from the day the first payment is made.

Under the 2026 to 2027 Student Loans Company terms, doctoral borrowers become due to start repaying from the April after they finish or leave the course, or the April 4 years after the course started, whichever comes first.

Repayments are only taken when income exceeds the applicable postgraduate repayment threshold. For the 2026 to 2027 tax year, the threshold is £21,000 a year, equivalent to £1,750 a month or £403.84 a week for payroll purposes, and the repayment rate is 6% of income above the threshold.

The threshold and repayment rules can change in later tax years, so borrowers should check the current Student Loans Company rules when repayments become due.

Do not confuse a doctoral loan with undergraduate finance

The Postgraduate Doctoral Loan is a separate form of funding with different eligibility rules, loan limits, repayment terms and application deadlines from undergraduate student finance.

If you previously used Student Finance England for an undergraduate degree, you can use the same account to start your doctoral application, but the new application is assessed under the postgraduate doctoral rules.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every PhD or professional doctorate automatically qualifies without checking the university's research degree awarding powers.
  • Applying for a course shorter than 3 academic years or longer than 8 academic years.
  • Assuming there is a single national application deadline rather than calculating it from the final academic year.
  • Waiting too long and missing the 9-month deadline.
  • Applying for a separate Master's Loan for an integrated master's element within an eligible doctoral programme.
  • Failing to disclose Research Council funding or another funding arrangement that makes you ineligible.
  • Sending a UK passport itself when GOV.UK asks for passport details rather than the physical passport.
  • Failing to provide additional residence or employment evidence when Student Finance England requests it.
  • Assuming the whole loan is paid immediately instead of being divided across the academic years and paid in three instalments each year.
