How to Get a Free IRS Tax Return Transcript Online or by Mail
Get a free IRS tax return transcript online, by mail, by phone or with Form 4506-T. Compare transcript types, available tax years and delivery times.
Helpydo structures practical guidance around official or public sources. For individual cases, confirm requirements with the responsible institution.
IRS tax transcripts are free. The fastest route is your IRS Individual Online Account, where you can view, download or print available transcripts after verifying your identity. A tax return transcript shows most line items from your original Form 1040-series return, including forms and schedules, but does not show later amendments or account adjustments. Tax return transcripts are generally available for the current tax year and three prior tax years. If you cannot use the online account, request a tax return or tax account transcript through Get Transcript by Mail or call 800-908-9946; IRS says mailed transcripts generally arrive in 5 to 10 calendar days at your address of record. You can also submit Form 4506-T, and most transcript requests on that form are processed within 10 business days.
What you need
- For online access, an IRS Individual Online Account and successful identity verification through the IRS account process.
- Your taxpayer information, including the Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number associated with the return.
- The tax year or period for the transcript you need.
- For Get Transcript by Mail or the automated phone service, the mailing address from your latest tax return must match IRS records.
- For Form 4506-T, your current name and address, the address shown on your last return if different, taxpayer identification information, the tax form number, transcript type and requested tax year or period.
- A completed, signed and dated Form 4506-T when using the paper or fax request route. The IRS must receive the form within 120 days of the signature date.
Eligibility
Individual taxpayers can request their own IRS tax transcripts. Anyone who can successfully verify their identity may create an IRS Individual Online Account. A tax return transcript for an individual generally covers a processed Form 1040-series return and is available for the current tax year and three prior tax years. On a joint return, either spouse may sign Form 4506-T to request the transcript. Availability depends on the transcript type and tax year requested; tax account and wage and income transcripts generally have longer year availability than tax return transcripts.
How to do it
- Choose the correct transcript type. Use a tax return transcript when you need most information from the original Form 1040-series return. Use a tax account transcript if you need later account changes, or a record of account when you need both original return information and subsequent account activity.
- Try the IRS Individual Online Account first. Sign in or create an account, complete identity verification, open the tax records area and select transcripts. Available transcripts can be viewed, downloaded or printed without a fee.
- Select the tax year you need. Tax return and record of account transcripts are generally available for the current tax year and three prior tax years. Other transcript types have different availability periods.
- Use Get Transcript by Mail if online access is not suitable. Enter the information requested by the IRS using the mailing address from your latest tax return. The IRS mails tax return or tax account transcripts to the address it has on file.
- Alternatively, call 800-908-9946. The automated IRS transcript service can be used to request a tax return or tax account transcript by mail.
- Use Form 4506-T when you need another transcript type or cannot use the self-service options. Complete the current Form 4506-T, select the transcript type, enter the requested tax year or period, sign it and send it to the IRS mail or fax destination listed on the form for your circumstances.
- Make sure Form 4506-T reaches the IRS within 120 days after you sign it. An incomplete, illegible, unsigned or stale request can be rejected.
- Wait for delivery when using a mail route. Get Transcript by Mail and phone requests generally arrive in 5 to 10 calendar days. Most Form 4506-T requests are processed within 10 business days.
- Check that you received the right document. A tax return transcript does not show amendments or later account adjustments. If you need those changes, request a tax account transcript or record of account instead.
The fastest option is your IRS Individual Online Account
The IRS provides tax transcripts free of charge. For most individual taxpayers, the fastest route is an IRS Individual Online Account. After signing in and completing the required identity verification, you can open your tax records and view, print or download available transcripts.
The IRS states that anyone who can verify their identity may create an Individual Online Account. The account is also available to individual taxpayers with international addresses.
What does a tax return transcript show?
A tax return transcript shows most line items from your original Form 1040-series federal income tax return as filed, together with information from accompanying forms and schedules. It includes figures such as adjusted gross income.
It is not a photocopy of the tax return. The transcript is a standardized IRS record designed to provide tax information while partially masking personally identifiable information.
A return transcript does not show later amendments
A tax return transcript generally reflects the original return as processed and does not show changes made after the original return was processed.
If you filed an amended federal tax return or the IRS later adjusted the account, a tax account transcript shows subsequent account activity. A record of account combines the return transcript and tax account transcript.
If you need to correct a previously filed federal return rather than simply obtain its record, see the Helpydo guide on filing an amended federal tax return with Form 1040-X.
Choose the transcript that matches what you need
The IRS currently provides several individual transcript types at no charge:
- Tax return transcript: most line items from the original Form 1040-series return and associated forms and schedules.
- Tax account transcript: basic return information plus payments, penalties, adjustments and other account activity.
- Record of account transcript: combines the tax return transcript and tax account transcript.
- Wage and income transcript: information reported to the IRS on documents such as Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 and 5498.
- Verification of non-filing letter: states that the IRS has no record of a processed Form 1040-series return for the requested period; it does not establish whether you were legally required to file.
How many years of tax return transcripts are available?
A tax return transcript is generally available for the current tax year and three prior tax years. The same general period applies to a record of account transcript.
Tax account transcripts have broader availability. Through Individual Online Account, they are generally available for the current tax year and nine prior tax years, subject to IRS availability limitations.
Wage and income transcripts are also generally available for the current tax year and nine prior tax years. Current-year wage and income information may be incomplete until employers and other payers have filed their information returns and the data has populated IRS systems.
How to get your transcript online
Use the IRS Individual Online Account when you want immediate self-service access to an available transcript. After successful registration and identity verification:
- Sign in to your Individual Online Account.
- Open the section for tax records or records and status.
- Select the transcripts option.
- Choose the transcript type and available tax year.
- View, save or print the transcript.
There is no fee to download or print transcripts from the account.
What do you need to access transcripts online?
The IRS requires users of Individual Online Account to verify their identity. Current IRS account access uses ID.me for the identity-verification process.
If you cannot successfully register or verify your identity online, you do not lose access to your tax records. The IRS provides mail, automated phone and Form 4506-T alternatives.
Request a tax transcript by mail without an online account
If you cannot or prefer not to use Individual Online Account, the IRS Get Transcript by Mail service can send a tax return transcript or tax account transcript to you.
You need the mailing address from your latest tax return, and the information you enter must match IRS records. The transcript is sent to the address the IRS has on file for you.
The IRS says mailed transcripts through this service generally arrive within 5 to 10 calendar days.
You can also request a transcript by phone
The IRS automated transcript service is available at 800-908-9946. It can be used to request a tax return or tax account transcript by mail.
The same general mail-delivery estimate applies: IRS guidance says to allow 5 to 10 calendar days.
Update your address before requesting a mailed transcript
Get Transcript by Mail and the automated phone service rely on the address in IRS records. If you have moved and the address on your latest return is no longer correct, do not rely on ordinary mail forwarding for the transcript.
The IRS instructs taxpayers whose address has changed to submit Form 8822, Change of Address, before using Form 4506-T when necessary. IRS transcript guidance says an address change generally takes about 4 to 6 weeks to process.
Use Form 4506-T for additional transcript requests
Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, can be used to request a tax return transcript, tax account transcript, record of account, wage and income transcript or verification of non-filing information.
The current form requires information such as your name, taxpayer identification number, current address, previous return address when different, requested tax form number and requested tax year or period.
Use only one tax form number per Form 4506-T request. Follow the current form's mailing or fax chart because the correct IRS destination depends on the return type and where you lived or the business was located when the return was filed.
The IRS must receive Form 4506-T within 120 days of signing
Form 4506-T must be signed and dated, and all applicable lines must be complete before signing. The current form states that the IRS must receive it within 120 days of the signature date or the request will be rejected.
You must also check the attestation box in the signature section confirming your authority to sign and request the information. The current form warns that the request will not be processed if that box is left unchecked.
Most Form 4506-T requests are processed within 10 business days
For the transcript types listed on the current Form 4506-T, the IRS states that most requests are processed within 10 business days.
This is a processing estimate rather than a guaranteed delivery date. Mailing time and issues with incomplete or mismatched taxpayer information can add time.
A shorter form is available for some individual return transcript requests
Form 4506-T-EZ is a shorter option specifically for an individual tax return transcript. It is not designed to request all the transcript types available on Form 4506-T.
Taxpayers whose tax year begins in one calendar year and ends in the next, such as certain fiscal-year taxpayers, must use Form 4506-T instead of Form 4506-T-EZ.
Can one spouse request a joint return transcript?
For a joint return requested with Form 4506-T, either spouse can generally request the transcript and only one signature is required. The form asks for the identifying information for both spouses when applicable.
The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service notes that the secondary spouse on a joint return should use online access or Form 4506-T when requesting a return transcript rather than relying on the automated mail or phone route.
Taxpayers with an ITIN can request transcripts
Form 4506-T accepts the taxpayer identification number used on the return, including an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, where applicable.
If you need an ITIN rather than a transcript, Helpydo has a separate guide explaining how to apply for an IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number with Form W-7.
IRS transcripts partially mask identifying information
Most IRS transcripts partially mask personally identifiable information to reduce the risk of identity theft. Financial information remains visible so the transcript can still be used for purposes such as income verification, tax preparation and tax representation.
For example, IRS guidance says most transcripts show only the last four digits of a Social Security number and abbreviated portions of names and addresses.
A lender can give you a customer file number
If a lender or another organization gives you a reference number for matching the transcript to your application, IRS transcript systems and Form 4506-T provide an optional Customer File Number.
The number can contain up to 10 numeric characters and must not be a taxpayer identification number such as a Social Security number. When accepted, it appears on the transcript so the recipient can associate the record with the correct application or account.
Form 4506-T transcripts are mailed to the taxpayer
For security reasons, the IRS no longer uses Form 4506-T to mail requested tax transcripts directly to ordinary third parties. The current form states that masked transcripts are mailed to the taxpayer's address of record.
The IRS also states that it does not fax transcripts to taxpayers or mail Form 4506-T transcripts directly to third parties. Specialized authorized transcript-delivery arrangements for tax professionals and income-verification providers use separate IRS systems.
A transcript is not a photocopy of your tax return
If an organization specifically requires a copy of the original return rather than a transcript, the transcript procedure is not the correct request. The IRS requires Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return, for a photocopy of an original filed return.
Unlike transcripts, which are free, copies requested with Form 4506 are subject to the fee and processing rules stated on that form.
Common transcript request mistakes to avoid
- Requesting a tax return transcript when you actually need changes from an amended return or later IRS adjustment.
- Expecting a transcript to be an exact photocopy of the originally filed tax return.
- Using an address that does not match IRS records when requesting a transcript by mail.
- Choosing a tax year that is outside the availability period for the selected transcript type.
- Using Form 4506-T-EZ when you need a transcript type other than an individual tax return transcript.
- Leaving required Form 4506-T fields blank or submitting an illegible form.
- Forgetting to sign, date or check the attestation box on Form 4506-T.
- Allowing more than 120 days to pass between signing Form 4506-T and IRS receipt.
- Entering a Social Security number as the optional Customer File Number.
- Paying an unofficial website for a transcript that the IRS provides free.
