How to Cancel a Vehicle Registration You No Longer Need in NSW
Cancel NSW vehicle registration by lodging the required form and surrendering the number plates. Check the cancellation fee, unused vehicle tax refund and different interstate process.
Helpydo structures practical guidance around official or public sources. For individual cases, confirm requirements with the responsible institution.
If you are the registered operator, you can cancel your NSW vehicle registration at a Service NSW Centre. Bring the completed Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration form, proof of identity, number plates or the required evidence if they are missing, and the cancellation fee. You may also request a refund of unused motor vehicle tax if you cancel before the registration expires. If you now live interstate, a separate remote process is available.
What you need
- Completed Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration form for a standard cancellation within NSW.
- Proof of identity, the Certificate of Registration if available, and the vehicle's number plates. If the plates were lost, stolen or destroyed, obtain the evidence Service NSW requires, such as a police event number.
- Payment of the applicable cancellation fee.
- Request for refund of NSW registration form if seeking a refund of unused motor vehicle tax.
- Police or insurer documentation showing the incident date if the vehicle was stolen or written off and this affects the cancellation or refund.
Eligibility
The vehicle's registered operator can cancel its NSW registration at any time. This includes when the vehicle is no longer needed, has been stolen or written off, or will no longer be registered in NSW. A refund of unused motor vehicle tax generally requires cancellation before the registration expiry date. Separate instructions apply if you now live interstate or the vehicle has conditional registration.
How to do it
- Decide whether cancellation is the correct action. If you sold a registered vehicle with its plates, check the notice of disposal requirements instead.
- Obtain and complete the current Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration form. Complete the refund request form as well if you want to claim unused motor vehicle tax.
- Gather proof of identity, the registration certificate if available, the plates or required evidence explaining why they cannot be returned, and any police or insurer documents relevant to a stolen or written-off vehicle.
- Visit a Service NSW Centre, lodge the application, surrender the plates and pay the applicable fee. Ask about reserving the plate combination first if you want to retain it.
- Keep the cancellation evidence and, if applicable, follow up on the motor vehicle tax refund and any separate compulsory third party insurance refund with the insurer.
When should you cancel your NSW vehicle registration?
The registered operator can cancel a vehicle's NSW registration at any time, including when the vehicle is no longer needed, has been stolen or written off, or is being registered in another state or territory. Cancelling registration requires surrendering the number plates or providing the evidence required when they cannot be returned. The ordinary cancellation within NSW is completed at a Service NSW Centre, not through an online cancellation form.
If you sold or gave away a NSW-registered vehicle with its plates, a notice of disposal is normally the relevant seller action. Cancellation is required instead for a written-off vehicle or a vehicle sold to a wrecker without its plates. Do not confuse the seller's notice with the buyer's registration transfer.
What should you take to a Service NSW Centre?
Complete the Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration form. Bring proof of identity, the Certificate of Registration if available, the number plates and the applicable fee. Complete the Request for refund of NSW registration form if you are seeking unused motor vehicle tax. Obtain the current forms through Service NSW or Transport for NSW before your visit.
If the plates were stolen, report this to police and obtain a police event number. Service NSW also specifies evidence where plates have been lost or destroyed. If the vehicle was stolen or written off, take a police or insurer document showing the incident date. Where a vehicle has joint registered operators, only the primary operator needs to sign the cancellation form.
How do you cancel the registration within NSW?
- Complete the cancellation form and, if relevant, the refund request.
- Gather your identity evidence, registration certificate if available, number plates and any incident documents.
- Visit a Service NSW Centre to lodge the forms, surrender the plates and pay the cancellation fee.
If you want to retain your number plate combination, ask Service NSW about putting the plates in reserve at the centre. Reservation has additional fees. You cannot simply keep the plates after cancelling the registration.
What does cancellation cost, and what can be refunded?
The published fee for cancelling a standard NSW vehicle registration is $37. You may be entitled to the unused portion of the motor vehicle tax if the registration is cancelled before its expiry date. The cancellation fee is deducted from that refund. The registration fee and number plate fees are not refunded.
A compulsory third party (CTP) insurance refund is a separate matter for the insurer. If your vehicle was written off, Service NSW says you may be eligible for a refund of remaining CTP insurance and should provide the insurer with evidence of cancellation. Evidence of the incident date may also affect a motor vehicle tax refund for a stolen or written-off vehicle.
What if you have moved interstate?
Service NSW provides a separate process for a registered operator who now lives interstate. It uses the Request for refund of NSW registration form and either the NSW plates or a surrendered number plate receipt from the interstate authority, along with identity and registration entitlement documents. Depending on the circumstances, proof of interstate registration and stamp duty payment may also be needed. The documents can be submitted as directed on the form; if you still have the NSW plates, they must be posted with the application.
Consider registering the vehicle and dealing with stamp duty in your new state before cancelling NSW registration. Service NSW says interstate refund requests can take 6 to 8 weeks; this is a refund estimate, not a stated processing time for an ordinary cancellation at a centre.
Do written-off or conditionally registered vehicles follow different rules?
If an insurer classifies the vehicle as written off, Service NSW says to take the plates to a centre within 14 days of the vehicle being written off to complete the cancellation. Bring the cancellation form, identity evidence and the relevant police or insurer statement. A vehicle with conditional registration has a separate cancellation procedure: complete the cancellation advice on its Certificate of Conditional Registration and take the certificate, plates and identity evidence to a Service NSW Centre. There is no fee to cancel conditional registration.
After cancellation, retain the transaction evidence. If you want to register the vehicle again later, cancellation does not keep its former registration active.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel my NSW vehicle registration online?
No online cancellation route is listed for the ordinary NSW process. The registered operator takes the completed form, identity evidence and plates to a Service NSW Centre. A separate remote process applies to eligible operators living interstate.
How much does it cost to cancel a NSW vehicle registration?
The published standard cancellation fee is $37. There is no cancellation fee for conditional registration.
Will I get a refund when I cancel my registration?
You may receive the unused portion of NSW motor vehicle tax if you cancel before the registration expires. The cancellation fee is deducted. Registration and number plate fees are not refunded.
What if my number plates were stolen?
Report the theft to police and obtain a police event number to provide during cancellation. Service NSW ordinarily requires the plates to be surrendered when registration is cancelled.
Should I cancel registration after selling my car?
If you sold a NSW-registered car with its plates, submit a notice of disposal so Transport for NSW records the change. Cancellation applies in situations such as a written-off vehicle or a sale to a wrecker without plates.
Can I keep my personalised plates when I cancel registration?
Ask Service NSW to place the plate combination in reserve at a service centre. Additional reservation fees may apply; you cannot simply retain the plates after cancellation.
Can I cancel NSW registration after moving interstate?
Yes. Service NSW has a separate interstate process requiring its refund form, surrendered plate receipt or NSW plates, and supporting documents. Consider the new state's registration and stamp duty requirements before cancelling.
