How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration Online in NSW
Renew an existing NSW vehicle registration online through Service NSW. Check CTP insurance, pink slip requirements, renewal timing, payment options and short-term registration rules.
Helpydo structures practical guidance around official or public sources. For individual cases, confirm requirements with the responsible institution.
To renew an eligible NSW vehicle registration online, have your number plate or renewal billing number ready, arrange current NSW compulsory third party (CTP) insurance if required, and complete any safety inspection shown on your renewal notice. You can then renew and pay through Service NSW. Online renewal is generally available from 3 months before expiry until 3 months after expiry, but you must not drive the vehicle while its registration is expired.
What you need
- Your NSW vehicle registration must be eligible for online renewal.
- Have the vehicle's NSW number plate or the billing number shown on the paper or digital renewal notice or digital Certificate of Registration.
- Have a current NSW compulsory third party insurance policy, commonly called a green slip, if CTP is required for the vehicle.
- Complete the safety inspection or other inspection shown as required on your renewal notice.
- Have payment available for the registration amount due.
- If claiming an applicable concession, make sure the required concession details are current.
Eligibility
You can renew an existing NSW vehicle registration online if the registration and vehicle meet Service NSW eligibility rules. Online renewal is not available if the vehicle has been unregistered for more than 3 months, if special number plates were ordered during the renewal period and have not yet been received, if the vehicle is registered under the Common Expiry Date Scheme, or for certain conditional registrations that require an inspection or changes to operating conditions. Different procedures may apply to vehicles with defects or other special registration conditions.
How to do it
- Check your registration renewal notice and confirm the expiry date, renewal term and whether an inspection is required.
- Buy the required NSW CTP insurance, or green slip. The CTP term must match the registration term you intend to select.
- If your renewal notice requires an inspection, have the vehicle inspected and make sure the result has been submitted to Transport for NSW.
- Have your NSW number plate or registration renewal billing number ready.
- Use the Service NSW online vehicle registration renewal service and follow the prompts.
- Confirm the registration term and other details offered during the transaction.
- Pay the amount due using an available payment method. If you choose BPAY, allow for its processing time.
- Keep the renewal receipt for your records and confirm that the registration has been renewed before driving if the previous registration had already expired.
What do you need before renewing your NSW rego online?
For a standard NSW vehicle registration renewal, the main prerequisites are your vehicle details, any required compulsory third party insurance (CTP or green slip), any inspection required for the vehicle, and payment of the registration amount.
You can identify the vehicle using its NSW number plate or the billing number shown on your paper or digital renewal notice or digital Certificate of Registration.
Get your CTP green slip first
All vehicles except trailers and caravans must generally have CTP insurance before registration can be renewed. Vehicles registered in NSW must use a NSW CTP insurer. Most insurers send the policy information electronically to Transport for NSW, so you normally do not need to provide a paper green slip during the online transaction.
The CTP policy term must match the registration term. For example, if you choose a 6-month registration term, you need CTP insurance covering that term. If you choose a 6-month renewal, you must pay for the CTP insurance and renew the registration no later than 21 days after the registration expiry date.
Check whether you need a pink slip
Your registration renewal notice tells you whether an inspection is required. Most light vehicles more than 5 years old need an annual safety inspection report, commonly called a pink slip.
A light-vehicle NSW safety inspection report is generally valid for 6 months and must be used to renew the registration within that period. Only an Authorised Inspection Scheme station can perform the safety inspection. When the vehicle passes, the inspection result is sent electronically to Transport for NSW.
If the vehicle fails its safety check, the defects must be repaired before registration can be renewed. If the repairs are completed within 14 days and the vehicle is reassessed at the same authorised inspection station, the NSW Government states that no additional inspection fee applies.
How do you renew vehicle registration online in NSW?
Once the CTP and inspection requirements have been satisfied, eligible registrations can be renewed through the Service NSW online service.
- Check that the vehicle is eligible for online renewal.
- Enter the vehicle's NSW number plate or registration renewal billing number.
- Follow the Service NSW prompts and confirm the renewal details.
- Select the registration term available for your vehicle.
- Pay the amount due using an available payment method.
- Keep a copy of your receipt.
If you have opted in to Digital Vehicle Registration, your digital Certificate of Registration is available through your MyServiceNSW Account after the registration details are updated.
How early or late can you renew NSW registration?
You can renew an eligible NSW registration online up to 3 months before it expires and up to 3 months after expiry.
If you renew after the expiry date, the registration period starts from the date you pay, but the expiry date remains based on the existing registration cycle. This means a late renewal does not give you a completely new 12-month period.
If the registration expires, the vehicle is unregistered until it is renewed. You must not drive an unregistered vehicle. Driving an unregistered vehicle is illegal and can also mean the vehicle is not covered by CTP insurance.
If the registration has been expired for more than 3 months, you cannot use the normal online renewal process and will need to re-register the vehicle.
Can you renew NSW registration for 6 months instead of 12?
Depending on the vehicle, shorter registration terms are available. Most light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass, including motorcycles and trailers, can have a 6-month registration term. Trailers and heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM may have 3-month or 6-month terms.
Changing the registration term can change the inspection requirements. If you change terms, obtain a new renewal notice so you can check whether an additional inspection is required. Your CTP insurance term must also match the registration term.
How much does NSW vehicle registration renewal cost?
There is no single renewal price for every NSW vehicle. The amount depends on factors including the vehicle, registration term, applicable motor vehicle tax and any concession or discount. Service NSW directs motorists to the official registration calculator for the amount applicable to their vehicle.
NSW registration fees and taxes are reviewed periodically. From 1 July 2026, registration fees increased by 2.65%, rounded to whole-dollar amounts.
2026 private vehicle registration discount
For registrations covered by the NSW Government's temporary scheme from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, eligible privately registered light motor vehicles receive a $100 discount on annual registration and eligible privately registered motorcycles receive an $80 discount.
For eligible 6-month registrations, the corresponding pro-rata discount is $50 for a privately registered light motor vehicle and $40 for a privately registered motorcycle. The discount is applied automatically when the vehicle is eligible.
The discount does not apply to categories including business-registered vehicles, private trailers and caravans, plant vehicles, heavy vehicles, conditionally registered vehicles, or vehicles already receiving certain registration concessions, discounts, refunds or rebates.
How can you pay for an online registration renewal?
Service NSW supports online vehicle registration payment, including credit card and BPAY where available. If you select BPAY, the online system generates the Biller Code and Customer Reference Number after Transport for NSW confirms the necessary CTP insurance and inspection requirements.
BPAY normally takes 2 to 3 business days to reach Transport for NSW. Registration is not renewed until the full payment is received. Service NSW recommends using another payment method when the registration is due to expire within 3 business days.
When can you not renew your registration online?
You need another renewal or registration pathway if the vehicle is not eligible for the standard online transaction. Service NSW states that you cannot use standard online renewal when:
- the vehicle has been unregistered for more than 3 months
- you ordered special number plates during the renewal period and have not yet received them
- the vehicle is registered under the Common Expiry Date Scheme
- a conditionally registered vehicle requires an inspection
- a conditionally registered vehicle requires changes to its operating conditions.
A vehicle with outstanding defects also has additional requirements and may need to be renewed at a Service NSW Centre after the defects and required inspections are cleared.
What if you have sold the vehicle instead?
Renewal is for keeping an existing registration current. If you have sold or disposed of the NSW-registered vehicle, the relevant next step is generally to submit a notice of disposal rather than renewing it for your continued use.
If you no longer need the registration, see the separate procedure for cancelling a NSW vehicle registration.
