What you need

  • You must be overseas; Australian emergency passports are issued through overseas posts for urgent travel.
  • You must be an Australian citizen and meet the applicable passport identity, citizenship and entitlement requirements.
  • You need an approved passport application and the supporting documents required for your circumstances.
  • Passport applications lodged overseas must be lodged in person at an Australian embassy or consulate; completing an application online does not replace in-person lodgement.
  • For a new adult passport application overseas, the Australian Passport Office normally requires original citizenship and identity documents, two compliant passport photos and a guarantor. The embassy or consulate can advise what is required for your emergency application.
  • For a child, the normal passport rules include evidence of citizenship and identity, passport photos and parental-consent requirements; contact the overseas post for the requirements applying to an urgent child application.

Eligibility

An emergency passport is for an Australian citizen who is overseas and has an urgent need to travel and cannot wait for the standard turnaround for a full-validity passport. Emergency passports are not the urgent-processing option for applicants who are in Australia. Issue is subject to the Australian Passport Office being able to establish the applicant's identity, Australian citizenship and entitlement to an Australian passport.

How to do it

  1. Contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate. Explain your urgent travel circumstances and ask about emergency-passport lodgement arrangements and whether an appointment is required.
  2. Prepare the passport application and supporting evidence. Follow the post's instructions. Passport applications can generally be prepared using the Australian Passport Office application process, but an overseas application must ultimately be lodged in person.
  3. Gather the required documents and passport photos. The exact documents depend on your application circumstances. Bring the originals requested by the embassy or consulate.
  4. Lodge the application in person. Attend the Australian embassy or consulate and provide the application, photographs and supporting documents.
  5. Pay the emergency passport fee. The 2026 fee is AUD 265. Overseas fees are usually paid in local currency at the equivalent Australian-dollar amount, with payment arrangements set by the post.
  6. Confirm your itinerary is compatible with an emergency passport. Before travelling, check the passport and visa requirements for every destination and transit country because the emergency passport has no electronic chip.
  7. Collect the document as instructed. Processing and collection arrangements depend on the overseas post and your circumstances.

When can you get an Australian emergency passport overseas?

The Australian Passport Office issues emergency passports through Australian overseas posts to Australian citizens who have an urgent need to travel and cannot wait for the standard turnaround time for a full-validity passport.

You can only apply for this type of emergency passport while you are overseas. If you are in Australia and need a passport urgently, different urgent-processing arrangements apply.

An emergency passport is not simply a faster version of a normal full-validity passport. It is a limited document intended to meet the holder's immediate travel needs.

Where do you apply?

Contact your nearest Australian embassy or consulate. The overseas post will tell you how to lodge the application, whether you need an appointment, what supporting documents are required for your circumstances and how collection will work.

Australian passport applications must be lodged in person. Although eligible applicants can prepare a passport application online and print it, the online process does not replace lodgement at an Australian embassy or consulate when you are overseas.

If the emergency arose because your passport was lost, stolen or damaged, the post can also advise you on the applicable replacement and reporting requirements. For the standard replacement process, see replacing a lost, stolen or damaged Australian passport.

What documents should you prepare?

The embassy or consulate should confirm the exact requirements for your emergency application. Australian passport applications require the Australian Passport Office to establish your identity, citizenship and entitlement to a passport.

For a new adult passport application lodged overseas, the standard requirements include documents proving Australian citizenship, original identity documents, two compliant passport photos and a guarantor. Documents must be in English or fully translated using an approved translation service where required.

Do not assume that an urgent journey removes normal identity or citizenship checks. An Australian travel document will not be issued if the application requirements are not met or identity, citizenship or entitlement cannot be established.

If you need evidence of Australian citizenship for a later passport application, see how to get or replace an Australian citizenship certificate.

How much does an emergency passport cost?

The Australian Passport Office lists the emergency passport overseas fee as AUD 265 from 1 January 2026.

When paying overseas, you will usually pay in local currency at the equivalent Australian-dollar amount. Fees are usually paid by EFTPOS or credit card, but the Australian embassy or consulate where you lodge the application should confirm its local payment arrangements.

If you apply for a full-validity passport at the same time as the emergency passport, both the emergency passport fee and the applicable standard passport application fee apply.

How quickly can an emergency passport be issued?

The Australian Passport Office does not publish one guaranteed processing timeframe for emergency passports overseas. Contact the embassy or consulate handling your case for advice based on your location, circumstances and travel urgency.

This is different from an ordinary passport application overseas, for which the Australian Passport Office says to allow at least six weeks. Overseas adult and child ordinary passport applications are not eligible for Australia's Priority or Fast Track processing services; Australians overseas with urgent travel needs can instead be considered for an emergency passport.

How long is an emergency passport valid?

An Australian emergency passport has a maximum validity of one year. Because it is intended to meet immediate travel needs, it may be issued for less than the maximum period.

The current emergency passport has only six visa pages and, critically, does not contain a passport chip. It is therefore not a biometric Australian passport.

Why does the missing chip matter?

Not every country accepts Australian emergency passports on the same terms as ordinary biometric passports. Some countries exclude emergency or non-biometric passports from visa-waiver or visa-on-arrival arrangements.

Before you book or continue your journey, check whether every country you will enter, exit or transit through accepts the emergency passport and whether you need a visa. A route that would normally be visa-free on a standard Australian passport may not be visa-free with an emergency passport.

Can you also apply for a normal passport?

Yes. The Australian Passport Office allows you to apply for a full-validity passport at the same time as the emergency passport. Both application fees apply.

The full-validity passport can be collected when you return to Australia or from your country of residence. The Australian Passport Office or overseas post will confirm the delivery or collection arrangements when you lodge the application.

If your situation does not require an emergency document and you need an ordinary passport instead, the relevant Helpydo guides cover renewing an Australian adult passport and applying for a first Australian adult passport.

What should you check before travelling?

  • Confirm the emergency passport's actual expiry date rather than assuming it has been issued for a full year.
  • Check entry, exit and transit requirements for every country on your itinerary.
  • Check whether a visa waiver or visa-on-arrival arrangement requires a biometric passport.
  • Confirm any passport-validity requirements imposed by the destination, transit country or airline.
  • Follow the embassy or consulate's instructions about collection and any simultaneous full-validity passport application.

The key limitation is the absence of the electronic chip. Receiving an emergency passport does not itself guarantee that a foreign government or airline will accept it for your planned route.
