How to Cancel Unemployed Status After Starting a New Job in Ukraine

What should you do after starting a new job?

If you are registered with the State Employment Service and begin working, tell your career adviser promptly. Current State Employment Service guidance states that a registered unemployed person must report circumstances affecting their legal status or benefit entitlement, including employment, within 3 working days.

Starting employment is itself a ground for termination of unemployment registration. You can also actively submit an application asking the employment service to terminate your registration instead of waiting for information about your employment to reach government systems through other channels.

The easiest self-service route is the official Diia cancellation service.

Do you cancel unemployed status as soon as you receive a job offer?

The important event is the beginning of employment or another activity that legally changes your employment status. Simply receiving an offer for work that has not yet started is not the same factual situation as already being employed.

If you nevertheless no longer want to remain registered as unemployed, the current procedure also lets a registered unemployed person submit a voluntary application for termination of registration. Under the official administrative service guide, when termination is based on that personal application, the termination date is the date the application is submitted to the employment centre.

How quickly must you report the new job?

The State Employment Service stated in current 2026 guidance that a registered unemployed person must notify the career adviser within 3 working days about changes that can affect registered-unemployed status or unemployment benefit.

This includes starting a job, including temporary employment, and starting entrepreneurial or other independent activity.

Do not assume that an employer's reporting to another government authority removes the need to communicate with your employment service adviser. Prompt notification helps prevent an incorrect continuation of unemployment registration or benefit payments.

How do you cancel unemployed status through Diia?

Diia currently provides a dedicated online service called cancellation of unemployed status. The portal estimates that completing the notice takes approximately 1 minute.

1. Sign in to Diia.
2. Open the unemployment-status cancellation service.
3. Check whether your profile information is correct and update it if necessary.
4. Select the employment centre where you are being served.
5. State the reason for terminating your registration.
6. Sign and submit the electronic application.

Diia states that the application must be electronically signed. Current registration rules allow the electronic termination application to use Diia.Signature or another electronic signature that meets the applicable requirements.

What information must the cancellation application contain?

The official Diia Guide states that the application for termination of unemployment registration is submitted in free form and contains:

• Your surname, first name and patronymic, if you have one.
• Your unique record number in the Unified State Demographic Register, UNZR, if available.
• The name of the employment centre where you are registered.
• The reason for terminating your unemployment registration.

The applicant is responsible for the accuracy of the information submitted.

Can you cancel unemployed status at an employment centre?

Yes. Following amendments that took effect in 2026, the registration procedure expressly allows a registered unemployed person to submit the termination application in paper form during a direct visit to an employment centre.

This is useful if you cannot use Diia, do not have an appropriate electronic signature or want assistance from the employment service.

The current rules also permit electronic applications through Diia, including the Diia mobile application where technically available, and provide for additional electronic State Employment Service channels where the required technical functionality exists.

Are there other application channels?

Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 40 of 7 January 2026 expanded the procedure so that, where the necessary technical capability exists, an application for termination of unemployment registration can also be submitted through a service centre using Diia infrastructure and the administrator's qualifying electronic signature.

Availability of that assisted electronic channel depends on technical implementation. If you need a predictable offline option, a direct visit to your State Employment Service employment centre remains expressly provided for in the current rules.

Does it cost anything to cancel unemployed status?

No. The service is free. Both the current Diia service and the official administrative service guide state that no administrative fee is charged for termination of unemployment registration.

How long does the cancellation take?

The public-facing Diia service states that your unemployed status will be cancelled within up to 3 working days.

The official Diia administrative service guide lists a standard service period of 1 day. Importantly, that guide states that when termination is requested by the registered unemployed person's own application, the legal date of termination is the date the application is submitted to the employment centre.

These figures describe different aspects of the process: the application has an effective termination date under the governing procedure, while the electronic system may take time to finish processing and display the cancelled status.

What happens to unemployment benefit after the status ends?

Unemployment benefit is linked to registered-unemployed status. Diia expressly states that unemployment benefit payments stop when the person no longer has the required unemployed status.

If you have already started employment, do not continue treating yourself as eligible merely because an electronic account has not yet visually updated. Current State Employment Service guidance warns that employment is a circumstance affecting both status and benefit entitlement.

What if you keep receiving unemployment benefit after starting work?

Report the employment immediately and contact your employment centre if payments continue after your entitlement should have ended. State Employment Service guidance warns that concealing employment or income can lead to recovery of benefits that were paid when the person was no longer entitled to them.

This is why the 3-working-day notification period matters even when you expect your employer's information eventually to appear in state registers.

Does temporary work also affect unemployed status?

Yes. The State Employment Service's current guidance specifically includes employment, even temporary employment, among changes that must be reported.

The broader unemployment-registration rules treat the beginning of employment as a ground for termination and include work under a labour contract. The rules also cover other forms of activity that make a person employed under Ukrainian law, including qualifying work under civil-law arrangements and starting entrepreneurial or other independent activity.

Participation in certain public or temporary works organized under the employment legislation can be treated differently, so do not assume every short-term activity automatically has the same consequence. Ask your career adviser if the work is part of an employment-service program.

What if the Diia cancellation service does not work for you?

If you cannot complete the online application, contact or visit the employment centre where you are registered. Current rules expressly provide a paper application during a direct visit.

If the problem is only an electronic-signature issue, using the in-person route avoids delaying notification of your employment. The important practical point is to report the new work within the applicable period rather than waiting for an online technical problem to resolve itself.

What should you keep after cancelling your status?

Keep the electronic submission confirmation or other evidence showing when your application was filed. This is particularly useful because the official service guide identifies the application date as the termination date when registration is cancelled on your personal request.

After processing, check your electronic account or confirm with the employment centre that the status has been terminated. If you were receiving unemployment benefit, also check subsequent payments so that any apparent overpayment can be addressed promptly.

Can you register as unemployed again if the new job later ends?

Finding employment and properly ending your current unemployment registration does not by itself create the 90-day re-registration restriction that Ukrainian employment legislation applies to certain sanction-based grounds for termination.

If the new employment later ends and you again meet the legal conditions for registered-unemployed status, you can make a new application under the rules in force at that time. This is a separate procedure from cancelling your current status.
